Materials: worsted weight yarn, preferably wool; size 10 1/2 needles; tapestry needle; 1" wide button
Gauge: does not matter, as long as you use same weight yarn and same size needles
Directions
Cast on 20 stitches. Border: knit in garter stitch (knit both sides) for 6 rows.
Repeat following 6 rows until piece measures 17 inches (or fits around your neck) from beginning:
Row 1 (WS): knit 3, purl 14, knit 3
Row 2: knit 20
Row 3: repeat row 1
Row 4: repeat row 2
Row 5: repeat row 1
Row 6: knit 7, C6B, knit 7
Once piece measures 17 inches, repeat Rows 1-5 once more.
Switching to garter stitch:
Rows 1-2: knit
Row 3: Knit 9, bind off 2, knit 9.
Row 4: Knit 9, cast on 2 (I used backwards loop cast-on), knit 9.
Rows 5-6: knit
Bind off loosely.
